Cristina loved science class more than anything. It was a place of bubbling beakers and amazing discoveries. One Monday, a new girl named Lyra sat at her table. Lyra was quiet, with eyes the color of summer violets, and she doodled strange, swirling patterns in her notebook. During their experiment on light, Cristina noticed something odd. When a sunbeam hit Lyra’s back, a faint, sad shimmer appeared under her sweater. After class, Cristina found Lyra hiding behind the big oak tree on the playground. Peeking out from her backpack were the most beautiful, but dull, see-through wings Cristina had ever seen. They looked like dragonfly wings, but they had lost all their sparkle. "I'm a fairy," Lyra whispered, her voice trembling. "But I can't fly. My wings have lost their glimmer."
