Eight-year-old Tanya loved to draw and write stories. One afternoon, she drew a fantastic vehicle. 'It's a car!' she decided. 'It's big, and it's red.' She tried to write a label, first writing 'a big, red car,' which sounded just right. Then, just for fun, she wrote 'a red, big car.' She scrunched up her nose. That sounded a little funny. 'Hmm,' she wondered aloud, 'Why does it sound right to say 'a big, red car' but a little strange to say 'a red, big car'?'
