Background for The Dragon Who Forgot to Fly
One sunny afternoon, Zuno was walking through the whispering woods near his school. He loved the rustle of the trees and the way the birds told each other secrets in the sky. Suddenly, he heard a big THUMP and a loud SNEEZE. He peeked through a bush and gasped. A small green dragon with golden eyes was sitting on a rock, rubbing its nose and sniffling. One wing was droopy. The other was covered in leaves. “Oh no! Are you hurt?” Zuno asked, stepping closer. “I’m not hurt,” said the dragon with a sniff. “I just… I forgot how to fly.” Zuno blinked. “Dragons forget flying?” “I guess I’ve been sad for too long,” the dragon said, curling its tail. “And when you’re sad for too long, you forget happy things. Like flying.” Zuno sat beside the dragon and opened his backpack. He pulled out a sandwich, a crayon, and a notebook. “Let’s fix that,” he smiled. First, they drew wings — big, silly, floppy wings — just to make the dragon laugh. Then Zuno told stories of paper airplanes, butterflies, and balloons. Finally, they made a game. Zuno would run, flap his arms, and shout, “Wheee!” The dragon had to copy him, no matter how funny it looked. At first, the dragon just waddled. Then it hopped. Then… it lifted a little. “Whoa!” Zuno cheered. “You’re doing it!” With one final hop, the dragon soared over the trees, laughing and twirling in the sky. “You helped me remember,” the dragon called down. “Wanna ride?” Zuno climbed on, and together they looped across the clouds like old friends. When Zuno got home, his shoes were full of feathers and his heart full of joy. And the dragon? He never forgot how to fly again.
